In Taiwan, there’s this community called Jane’s Pearl that preserves the area’s rice paddy based industry. This Jenju village community is the ancestral site of the pingpu kamalan tribe. Do you know that following each rice harvest, the are huge amount of rice straw left behind? In the old times, these are essential supplies to build buildings, but as time changes, these excess supplies are no longer utilized. Taiwanese designers Gina Hsu and Nagaaki Shaw have developed “Rice Straw Design” to promote this material itself, they use it as beautiful craft objects. Including below bird feeders. Do you want to learn how to work with the natural material? You can come and visit Lanyang Museum in Taiwan, the project will be shown until September 26th, 2010.
